Submerged, 2012-2015

Being underwater is a state of buoyancy, fluidity and weightlessness.   Unlike the open sea, water in a pool offers an ambiguous spatial depth with a color range from indigo to cerulean.   The figures in these images emerge from the blue field surrounded by fabric and tulle.  The color blue is a mindset for me, it speaks of desire, daydreams, blue gestures and blue thoughts.  In this state of being submerged, we are brought to a place of sensory awareness and uncertain reality.  Light, reflections and the confusion of materials and figure produce a world both mysterious and defined by light.

This series was initiated during an artist residency at Ondarte in Akumal Mexico in the summer of 2012.  I have worked extensively with the figure underwater and was eager to return to the project once it was possible to work digitally.  The series has been on-going and photographed in pools in Dallas.

The editioned prints are large scale (20 x 30, 33 x 47 or 40 x 60) archival pigment prints on Hahnemuhle William Turner paper.
