Sport of Spectators

The series “Sport of Spectators” was photographed in Southern California at the summer beach volleyball tournaments in l988-89. In the spirit of street photography, these images capture the sun, skin, gesture and narcissism of beach culture. The diptychs were edited to bring a black and white photograph and a color photograph into a visual dialog. I am interested in how color can
‘date’ an image, while a black and white photograph tends to be more timeless.

The diptychs are made of a 20 x 24” ‘type C’ print and a gelatin silver print matted into one large panel. The photographs were made with a Plaubel Makina 6 x 7 camera.
