Kress Building

The ‘Kress Building” series was completed in 1987 in the original Kress department store in downtown Riverside. UCR had purchased the building and would soon renovate it to be the California Museum of Photography. I worked with dance students from UCR to set up compositions with the architecture of
the abandoned structure. The additive lighting comes out of my earlier interests in hand coloring images with an intent to add a personal modification of color to the photographs.

The photographs were made with a 4 x 5 view camera on color transparency film. The 20 x 24 Cibachrome prints were made by Jerry Burchfield (of BC Space in Laguna Beach), a great photographer and color printer. Jerry passed away several years ago from cancer.
